where can I find information on how to fix a aquaterra spectrum kayak.?

January 6th, 2009 by Mike

My brother recieved a aquaterra spectrum kayak as a tip from a customer. (used) and theres a crack in it and some peddles for something does anyone know where I can find information on this wonderful boat thingy. THANX

The boat was built by Perception. It is a cross between a recreation boat and a touring boat. The peddles are for a rudder that may have been removed. I believe it is a rotomolded polyethylene plastic construction and if it is then the crack can be welded by someone with the equipment and knowhow. Pretty inexpensive fix when you find someone to do it.

First time kayaking…?

December 31st, 2008 by Mike

My friends and I are going to go kayaking tomorow, and the weather is going to be on the cooler side, with a high about 67 degrees. Any tips for kayaking in that cool weather? And any other tips for me as first timer? Thanks so much!

if your going to be going with a guide or instructor then you'll obviously have all the safety gear.

in terms of clothing. if you can get thermals then they would be great. make sure they're polyester as cotton ones become useless when they get wet.

old runners are great incase you take a swim and hae to walk along the river.

you'll be wearing a helmet but if you want to bring a swim cap with you it can be handy to create an extra layer in case your head gets cold. remember the water is much colder than the air.

if you want any tips for paddling, i'm sure it'll be easy enough for you to figure out. key parts:
-for travelling straight use vertical stokes
-turning, hold your paddles more horixontal
-moving straight is one of the hardest challenges for beginners but using positive forward strokes to correct your direction are much better than negative backward strokes which slow you down.

i could write a book on the basics but you'll figure them out as you go. in fact i've a couple of books on the basics :)

Can you kayak? Any tips for a novice?

December 28th, 2008 by Mike

The most common error I see with novice kayakers is with their paddling technique. As you apply force to the paddle, the main force of the forward stroke comes from pressing mostly forwards & downwards (a little) with the higher hand, with the lower hand mostly guiding the paddle blade. Many novice kayakers try to actively pull the paddle with the lower hand, which is both inefficient and tiring.

The best thing you can do is take an introductory lesson from a shop specializing in Kayaks & Canoes. Or try and get an experienced kayaker to 'show you the ropes'. If you are going to do moving water boating, especially white-water, then the lesson part is probably not really an option. Get proper training before attempting any significant moving water or any long distance paddling.

Make sure you have a proper life-vest (not a ski vest or one of those orange things) and make sure it fits you well. Wear a hat and use sunscreen. A whistle attached to the life-vest is a good idea for emergency signalling. Wear layered clothing appropriate to weather conditions.

Good luck, kayaking is great fun.
